Dear neighbors,

It has been a wonderful year for the Pleasantville Fund for Learning. The enthusiasm of our communty has enhanced Pleasantville education with over $43,000 of exciting grants.

For 14 years the Fund for Learning has been providing seed money for new ways of helping children learn in the Pleasantville Schools. This year, we awarded 8 grants (out of 17 requests). Our grants this year promote art, music, character education, physical education, critical and creative thinking skills and math technology. The smallest grant was student-initiated: $880 for a Video Messaging System.

The largest grant was $32,352 for a classroom set of laptop computers for the Pleasantville High School Math Department. We are excited to be able to help cultivate a new direction for math education. Using computers for Geometry and Statistics will offer students a depth of understanding that cannot be duplicated by pencil and paper. These laptops are much more than advanced calculators -- they will allow students to explore the behavior of geometric shapes and statistical alternatives.

After 14 years of granting seed money to the school district through your generous support, it is gratifying to see the rich and diverse educational “garden” we’ve created together. The hands-on learning opportunities which so many of our grants provide have become an integral part of each school’s curriculum.
